The prototypes of the upcoming Civic Type R have been spotted recently in the Nurburgring. Yes, there are two prototypes instead of one. One prototype is yellow while the other one is white. According to the spy shots and video, the white variant was seen to undergo the test both with and without a big rear wing. There is also the fact that the prototype has a deeper spoiler lip on its front while testing and a smaller rear spoiler.
What makes it more interesting is that although most of its exterior is visible, the yellow prototype’s lower halves of the front and rear and the roof are covered with camouflage. Why did Honda do that? Is it because the upcoming Civic Type R will have a carbon-fiber roof? We don’t know, but the probability is there.
2020 Honda Civic Type R Updates – Facelift, not Redesign
The current generation of the Civic Type R was released back in 2017. Indeed, it hasn’t been that long. Yet, Honda is going to release an updated iteration of the lineup. What does it mean? It means that the 2020 Honda Civic Type R will get a facelift, rather than a redesign. In most cases, a lineup gets a redesign after a few years. For the Civic Type R lineup, it is still too soon for a redesign.
Is the lack of a redesign a bad thing? Not necessarily. The current generation Civic Type R already looks good. Of course, improvement can always be added. As far as we know, the facelift will be done on the front and rear fascias with each of them feature new flicks. The roof is likely to get a facelift as well.
What about the engine under the hood? There is no official information yet regarding what will power the upcoming Civic Type R. Most likely, it will be powered by the same engine that powers the current Civic Type R.
Assuming the above to be true, the 2020 Civic Type R will be powered by a 2.0-liter, turbocharged inline-four engine capable of delivering up to 306 hp with 295 lb-ft of torque. The engine should be paired with a six-speed manual transmission gearbox in a front-wheel-drive system.
Will it be exactly the same? Unfortunately, we can’t answer that. At the moment, there is no report regarding the engine details. That being said, most reports expect that there should be some improvements and/or tweaks for the engine.
2020 Honda Civic Type R Price Bump
Lastly, there will be a price bump for the 2020 Civic Type R. This is not something unexpected. The 2017 model has a starting price of around $34,775. The price steadily rises in the 2018 and 2019 model. For the 2019 model, Honda set the starting price to around $36,610. And now, for the 2020 model, the starting price is set to around $37,230.
Does this price bump mean there will be major updates or upgrades for the 2020 Civic Type R? No according to the news. With the 2019 Civic Type R, Honda changed the interior slightly and included an updated audio system. With the 2020 model, on the other hand, apparent changes are not in sight.
While there will be a price bump, compared to the competitions, the price of the new 2020 Civic Type R is still quite decent. Many of the competitions are at the same price range or even more expensive.
These are the latest news about the 2020 Honda Civic Type R. What do you think? At the moment, we can get only a glimpse of how the upcoming Civic Type R will be. There is nothing to worry about, though. Soon enough, we will see the new Civic Type R on the market. Just be patient a little bit.
