Best Electric SUV - 2020 Hyundai Kona Electric

Choosing a more environment-friendly alternative is never a bad thing. Yes, including when it comes to vehicles. Are you looking for a good electric vehicle to drive? If you are, you may want to look at the 2020 Hyundai Kona Electric. It is an electrical counterpart of the Hyundai Kona, a stylish, capable and reliable compact crossover. We will tell you the styling, performance, features, and safety of the 2020 Kona Electric. Interested? Let’s get to it.

2020 Hyundai Kona Electric Design

First thing first, styling. In terms of styling, the Kona Electric carries on what the regular Kona does. However, as it is an electric vehicle, the exterior styling is focused on efficiency and aerodynamic. You can see this from its grille-less front as well as its lower ride height. The Kona Electric also has the floating roof but unlike the regular Kona, the floating roof comes in a tamer design.

The exterior styling may not seem as appealing since the whole focus is on efficiency and aerodynamic. But what about the interior styling? Fortunately, the interior styling of the Kona Electric is a lot better and classier than its gasoline counterpart.

The Kona Electric takes what is already good from the regular Kona and turns it into something better. The cabin is good and comfortable, there is a 7.0-inch touchscreen display as the standard in the center, and various wacky design elements and contrasting colors. Not to mention there are lots of silver surfaces in the interior as well, making it looks and feels more upscale.

2020 Hyundai Kona Electric Specs & Performance

The next thing is the performance. The 2020 Hyundai Kona Electric is powered by an electric motor paired with a 64.0-kWh battery pack. The maximum output of the motor is up to 201 horsepower with up to 290 lb-ft of torque. These are good numbers for a crossover, especially for an electric one.  For Kona Electric, only the front-wheel-drive system is available.

The Kona Electric has 0 to 60 mph time of 6.4 seconds, about 0.2 seconds faster than its regular counterpart. This is a quite an impressive feat as electric vehicles are often seen as less powerful than gasoline vehicles.

The electric crossover has a driving range of up to 258 miles per charge.  This range can be reached thanks to the aggressive regenerative braking feature, which allows for one-pedal driving thus extending the driving range.

Similar to the exterior styling, the performance is focused on efficiency as well. While the power output is excellent, the steering and suspension are tuned up to provide more comfort and less sport. It is a capable crossover to hand daily tasks but nothing fancier than that.

Features

The Kona Electric is a few thousand dollars more expensive than the regular Kona. The payoff is that it does come with excellent standard features. Is it worth the cost? If you are looking for a good electric vehicle with lots of standard features, the answer would be yes.

The base model, the SEL, comes equipped with features such as keyless ignition, 17-inch wheels, cloth upholstery, active safety technologies, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Even if you go for the base model, you will get plenty of features available to you. In addition to these amazing features, buyers are also provided with Hyundai’s excellent 60,000-mile/5-year bumper-to-bumper warranty.

The Limited model has all the standard features plus some additional features. It comes with a larger infotainment screen, an 8.0-inch touchscreen display, a power seat, leather seats, upgraded headlights, and premium audio system courtesy of Infinity. The Limited model costs about $4,700 more than the base model.

The highest model comes with the features that the Limited model has with the addition of navigation, parking sensors, and active cruise control (with the stop-and-go feature). This model costs $3,500 more than the Limited model.

Safety

The Kona Electric doesn’t have crash test scores yet. That being said, it comes with various safety technologies as standard. These technologies include active lane control, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, as well as a driver attention monitor.

2020 Hyundai Kona Electric Review; Verdict

To sum it up, the 2020 Hyundai Kona Electric has good styling, excellent performance, and lots of features. At around $30,000, the electric crossover is certainly a good choice if you want an electrical SUV and live in an area where the infrastructure supports electrical vehicles.
